Summary by Century Newsfront Newspapers: …With a call on Nigerian government to partner Researchers for holistic development …Says Nigerian economy is on life support, needs optimization techniques …issues two powerful communiqué By Our Correspondent The Institute of Operational Research and Management Science of Nigeria (IORMS) has rounded off a-4-day academic exercise of brainstorming, articulating and advocating for a better Nigeria through the instrumentality of operational research. The international conference christened, Resources Optimization for Sustainable Economic Development had a cream of researchers and professionals from all walks of life both in Nigeria in the Diaspora converged at the prestigious PG Hall of the Ignatius Ajuru University Of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria with over 50 papers presented both live and online real time on areas that had direct bearings on the Nigerian economy. In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference, the Institute observed that “1. Nigerian resources are being wasted thereby putting the economy on life support hence, the need to adopt optimization techniques to reduce waste and improve the economy 2. Most of the methods and strategies of Operations Research provide solutions for sustaining economic development in Nigeria but are practically ignored by the government”. In his Keynote address, a Fulbright Scholar, University of Chattanooga, USA, Prof. Aniekan Ebiefung who spoke extensively on the topic, Finding A Unique Solution Of The Vertical Linear Complimentarity Problem, stressed on the need of researchers to partner with government and industry-based organizations so as to derive the maximum benefits of research, which according to him, Nigeria is replete with intellectuals who have the key to the teething challenges. He gave instances of his collaborative work with governments that have yielded positive results and solved series of challenging problems. Prof. Ebiefung however, called on researchers and professionals to team up together with common solution front to present their works and problem solving capacity to the government and industry-based organization. In his remarks, the President and Chairman of Council, Institute of Operational Research and Management Science of Nigeria (IORMS), Prof. Idorenyin A. Etukudo (CFIAR, FIORMS) identified the gap that exists in developing nations such as Nigeria, expressed the hope that the conference will address most of the problems with a view to finding lasting solution, “Over the years, developments in various sectors of national life of developing countries have revealed a wide gap between theory in the form of academic researches and operations in practical terms. And as such, there is a growing need for professionals to work together in order to narrow this gap, providing solutions to real life problems using on-hand methods for solving these problems. Given one of our mandates, this conference is set to tackle these problems through paper presentations, round table discussions and workshop.” He advocated for concerted efforts to mount degree Programme in Operations Research, promised to produce on demand, the already developed curriculum for the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, “I wish to appeal to the Vice Chancellor of this University that his acceptance of hosting this conference should go beyond this but to also include the acceptance of our request to set in motion a means of mounting B.Sc Programme in Operations Research under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Potential students can be drawn from those desiring to study courses in Natural and Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and Management Sciences. As at now, only Modibbo Adama University, Yola in Nigeria has a running degree programme in Operations Research and it is B.Tech, which is a five year programme. If this university mounts a B.Sc programme in Operations Research, it will be the first university to mount a 4-year programme in Operations Research. We have already developed a curriculum in Operations Research for a 4-year programme. We can make the curriculum available on demand.” Among those who presented academic paper at the conference were, Lead Speaker, Prof. Margaret King, President, Global Institute of Planning and Sustainable Development, Chicago, Illinois, USA on, Building African Sustainable Development Together; Prof. P.O. Ekoko, Department of Mathematics, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, Resilience In Operations Research (Or) Techniques For Economic Development; Prof. B.I. Oruh, Department of Mathematics, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria, Resource Optimization: A key to sustainable economic Development and Ahmad Yahaya Haruna, Guaranteed Pursuit Time Of A Differential Game With Generalized Integral Constraints. Others are Prof. Peace Udosen, Dr. Saviour Ekpe both of Peace Institute of Management and Technology (Peace Poly), Innovation And Technology: Catalysts for sustainable developments as well as Efficient Resource Development respectively; Osho F. T., and Moses, F. O., comparison of methods in the spectral numerical analysis of magneto-convective Viscoelastic biofluid flow through poro-elastic media; Uduak J. Umondak; Ukeme P. Akra; Anthony A. Isaac On Application Of Factorial Experiment On Voltage Output Of Rechargeable Battery Using Different Conductor And Temperature Location. Highlight of the event included among other things, the award of a Pillar of Growth and Development of Higher Education in Nigeria presented to the VC IAUE, Prof. Okechuku Onuchuku; conferment of Fellowship Awards on Prof. B. I. Oruh and Dr. U. A. Victor-Edema for their outstanding contributions to the growth and progress of IORMS
